Thursday 22nd August – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington Marina
– cloudy and windy.
Fin – 27.33 knot max (year PB) , 24.68 knot ave (year PB), 9.43 knot
hour, 15.56 knot mile, 22.37 km., 13.10 knot alpha.
F2 Zantos 295 with 36 fin and Tushingham Bolt 5.5m.
After 3 days of windsurf foiling and really strong winds forecast, gusting
to 40 knots apparently but that was over egged as usual with the SW gusting
a little over 30 knots at best. A few were going to The Dip around nine to
get out before high water but I have never been a lover of small board/sail
windsurfing and if it was going to be too windy I was going to give it a
miss. Then the brief spell of rain stopped and with winds in the 20/30 knot
range I decided to go to Levington Marina to check out the conditions as SW
can be a good direction there! I arrived at the Marina at 10.30 with enough
water to launch easily and decided to give my fin board a try for only the
4th time this year as its so hard on the body compared to foiling! I used
my old F2 Xantos 295, a big board for the wind strength but river sailing
is gusty and the extra volume really helps and it sails through the bumps
very well! Sail choice is a bit of a lottery but I took a chance with my
5.5 again which proved OK for today's windy session! I spent the session
sailing across the corned of the Orwell to the left of the marina where the
strongest winds were to be found. Conditions were best with the tide lower
and I had fun bearing off down the swell over by the far beach. The nice
thing about this direction is that when you turn at both ends of the run
you are in 2/3 feet of water making it easy to stop for a breather! I am a
little rusty on the fin, finding the back strap took time as I don’t use
one on my foil board but my speeds gradually improved from 23 to 27 knots,
a year PB as was my average. With the river chopping up and the wind
increasing I decided to call it a day, shower and head for home, nice to
get out on the fin board!
As we had to do a big shop at Lidl Mag and I had a drive round at High
water to check out the waves and see if there was any flooding at the
Ferry, Love a windy day makes you feel good to be alive!
PS – was chuffed to get a pic of the rough seas taken at The Dip on
BBC’s Look East:)
